If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you probably are experiencing a bit of cabin fever. According to the Weather Channel, the winter season of 2013/2014 has been the coldest on record in a century for parts of the United States. Looking at the Weather charts for the next few months does not really show much improvement, so expect extreme weather conditions followed by bitter cold temperatures. However, the cure for cabin fever may not come in a mid-winter thaw, but with the Sun moving from reserved Capricorn and into social oriented Aquarius.

While the Sun is in Capricorn, there is a natural tendency for us to withdraw. Capricorn is associated with social structures, responsibilities, and focus on the more practical sides of life. On a more humorous note, it’s when the credit card bills from Christmas come home to roost. We go within and focus on getting our finances in order and all those dastardly resolutions we have chosen to make. However, the terrain of the sign of Aquarius is much different. Aquarius is an air sign so it is concerned with thoughts, ideas, progress, and since it is the natural ruler of the 11^th house our social circle. While the Sun is in Aquarius we need to feel part of the social fabric of society, so there is an urge to get out of the house (despite the cold temperatures) and begin to interact with others in a more meaningful way.

We can use the energy of the sign of Aquarius proactively to examine our social circles and decide whether or not it is giving us the food we need. In some cases, certain groups may fulfill us for a certain period of time, yet when we need other food others groups may be necessary. There is a powerful energy of reform in the sign of Aquarius, and often what we need to reform is ourselves.

Take some time while the Sun is in Aquarius to experiment with something new. Is there a group you have always had interest in? Are there new ideas you would like to explore that would require your interaction with others? Further, make a list of people you have lost contact with and reconnect to them once again. You will soon realize that the world is a greater place with all those “others” in it.

Mercury Sextile Uranus — Today’s Astrology — January 17, 2014

As an astrologer, difficult aspects such as yesterday’s Venus square Mars are problematic to write about. Having to tell your readers that this is a troubling aspect that brings forth difficulties especially in relationships is not my favorite thing to do. However, I love when the aspect energy the next day helps to provide the solution to the problems one may be having.

On Friday, Mercury in Aquarius will sextile Uranus in Aries. This is a magnificent aspect to help with the intensive energies of Venus square Mars because it provides us with a fresh look at our perspective. Since Mercury rules the mind and Uranus rules progressive change, we are given an opportunity to realize solutions that have eluded us in the past. Perhaps, we have participated in any attempting to solve the same problem over and over again with the wrong solution. Mercury sextile Uranus provides us the sudden insight to solve our situations. However, if you approach things too rigidly or attempt to hold onto your position to firmly, then this aspect can be rather difficult because it demands change to occur on one level or another.

Take some time out today to question whether or not you have tried to use the same solution on multiple occasions and ended up with the same results. If you have, now is the time to sit down and find a different approach. Do not fret too much, the answer will come to you suddenly and without much effort.

Venus Square Mars — Today’s Astrology — January 16, 2014

Venus in Capricorn will square Mars in Libra at 12:13 PM EST / 9:13 AM PST

Over the past 25 years of doing consultations with clients about relationships, I have come to understand that our ideas and beliefs about them morph and change as fast as the latest TV primetime lineup. Years ago, many of the problems that involved relationships were more security based. Women wanted a man to take care of them and provide them with security. Conversely, men wanted women to take care of them as well, but usually in the role of housekeeper and mother.

The good news is that as women have become more independent and self-reliant (and thankfully laws have been changed to allow that), the motivations behind relationships have changed as well. The one thing that has not changed is that many people (not all) enter into relationships with a hidden agenda.

Last week, I was speaking to a client of mine that I have consulted with a few times. She continues to go through problems with her relationship and despite her best efforts she is always fearful that he is going to be unfaithful. She becomes very anxious and heartbroken whenever he does not respond to her texts immediately and then is plagued with negative thoughts that paralyze her for days. She has a really difficult time understanding why he does not want engagement or marriage, and she feels it is because he does not feel that she is the right one. I asked her what she would like to have happen in this relationship and her response was, “I want him to marry me! All of my friends are married and I just want to be like them.” Meanwhile, her boyfriend has just started a business after being laid off in 2011 and is trying to establish himself once again. He has very little time to devote to giving her more in the relationship, and has informed her that he does not feel that he can take on the “responsibility” of marriage at this time. However, the consultation chart I was used showed that he felt pressured by her and this was the reason for his distancing. He actually wants the relationship, but he wants to build a foundation to be able to manage the relationship correctly. Unfortunately, giving him time to be ready to fully engage in a marriage is not what she is looking for. The fact is she has entered the relationship with an agenda because she wants to feel more accepted within her social circle.

So, this got me thinking about relationship struggles in general. How many times do we enter into relationships (this can be any relationship) with a hidden agenda? Despite what our partners tell us, do we often feel that we can change the situation in order to get what we want. When my client first got involved with her boyfriend, she was perfectly fine with him building a new business. Yet, when it started to interfere with her objective, she began to take things personally. This has led to a lot of agonizing pain for her that has her constantly questioning the relationships viability.

On Thursday, Venus in Capricorn will square Mars in Libra. This aspect is notorious for bringing “hidden agendas” out of their closet, and can cause difficulties in relationships. Any form of relationship tension will be tested under this aspect. The good news is that if you are unconscious about these “hidden agendas”, then they will rise to the surface so that you can deal with them constructively rather than infusing your relationship with toxic poisons.

Take some time out to really get clear about your objective in your relationships. This may mean that you have to ask yourself some hard questions including whether or not your relationship is giving you what you want and need at this point in your life. For example, it is not wrong to want to get married. It is not productive to force someone that is not ready for martial commitment to be ready when you want them to be. In addition, you may need to have serious discussions (be careful though because this aspect can cause intense arguments) about your relationships to make sure everyone is on the same page. However, when we get to the roots of what we really want and need we can begin to make decisions and choices that are more productive to achieve what we really desire in the future.

Mercury in Aquarius — Today’s Astrology — January 11, 2014

We are still at the beginning of the year and New Year’s resolutions are still on everyone’s mind. In fact, the next episode of Keep It Magic will focus on the power of intentions and how to use ink magic to create change in your life. So, this is a great time to refocus your resolutions and move them from “hoping” we stick with them to “insuring” we stick with them. The good news is that the aspect’s happening today will help us achieve our goals. However, sometimes before we can get our goals to stick, we have to figure out where they are being undermined.

On Saturday, January 11, 2014, we have our first planetary sign change of the year – Mercury will move out of earthy and structured Capricorn and into airy and idealistic Aquarius. Although Mercury has no essential dignity in Aquarius, he is in his own element of air and can navigate rather easily through the signs intellect landscape.

One of the benefits of Mercury moving into Aquarius is that it comes with a package of interesting characteristics. Mercury becomes revolutionary, progressive, and reforming. He is more interested in broad ideas rather than generalized concepts. Further, Mercury in Aquarius gives us the ability to see patterns within circumstances which gives us broader understanding with our present condition. We can use this energy to drill down to the basic patterns and take action to find resolution for those patterns in your life.

For example, your resolution is to “lose weight”. Ask yourself some simple questions:

Why am I having difficulty losing weight?
Why am I holding on to weight?
What is the weight serving me?
When did I learn to use food to self-medicate?

You can create a list of similar questions to help you get to the root of your resolutions.

You may want to consider life coaching, traditional therapy, or support groups to help integrate your unresolved inner issues with the individual you want to be now. You will find that taking up this challenge will help you keep and maintain your resolutions and use them to empower yourself into a greater tomorrow.

It’s the second Saturday of the New Year and the positive aspect train of the day continues. The last two aspect, (Venus sextile Saturn and Sun conjunct Venus) focused primarily on relationships. This blog post will be more self-focused.

At this point, everyone should have their resolutions sorted, gifted returned and exchanged, and ‘thank you’ letters and cars sent. It’s now time to get down to some serious business and Sun sextile Saturn gives us the right energy to do it.

Since this is a New Year, have you considered what you would like to achieve over the next 365 days? Would you like a new job? Explore a different career path? Find a relationship? There are many different avenue that we can use the New Year to plot some self-improvement, yet in order to achieve the desired results, it might require a bit of work. Sun sextile Saturn is an excellent time to focus on getting things done and examining our ambitions (Saturn rules ambitious oriented Capricorn) and make the plans necessary for you to achieve them in the physical world.

Take some time out of your day today to really analyze the direction you would like to take this year. In addition, list the path to get what you want. If you use mind maps or vision boards, now is the time to get them out. This exercise might require a bit of serious thinking and deep thought, but there is no better time than a Sun sextile Saturn aspect to explore your future in a tangible way with a strategy to get what you want.

Sun conjunct Venus — Today’s Astrology — January 11, 2014

Earlier this morning, we had the lovely aspect of Venus retrograde sextile Saturn which has given us an ability to communicate effectively in relationships in order for us to get our relationships moving in the right direction. Now, the Sun is going to conjoin with Venus which is going to put a little sparkly glitter on your already frosted cake.

In horary astrology, one of the aspects that is considered a marriage aspect is Sun conjunct Venus. Additionally, when progressed Venus aspects the Sun or the progressed Sun aspects Venus, significant relationships often occur – relationships that often lead to marriage.

But, why?

The Sun and Venus are both solar planets. The Sun makes us aware of our destiny and its job is to shine. Venus is the relationship planet; she gives us our ability to seek out relationships with others and makes us feel desirable. When these two planets get together, everything just looks better, is more enjoyable, and we put forth our most attractive face. The conjunction of the Sun and Venus allows us to “sell our personal wares” to others, and the energy makes them more receptive to purchase our “goods”.
