Today we have a major planetary aspect as the Sun in transformative Scorpio conjoins with the dense energies of Saturn. For some, today will be a bit of a downer because it is not filled with cuddly cats or cute dogs with puppy dog tails, but our minds will be focused on our responsibilities and getting the job done.

Saturn is a tough task master because he is concerned with concrete, tangible, and measurable reality. He is not real concerned with how many brilliant ideas you may have; instead he is concerned with what you can actually do and accomplish. So, today is more about putting your nose to the grindstone and completing tasks that require immediate attention rather than focusing on the big picture. Doing so will provide you with more framework in order to concentrate on other things in the future.

On the emotional level, there may be a tendency to feel isolated and alone. Saturn requires self-focus and can sometimes make us feel that we are not understood by others and we have difficulties relating at this time. Do not stay focused on these types of thought patterns as they arise, because the energy of this transit lasts a couple of days and your mood should snap back to normal shortly.

We have two rather intensive astrological aspects that we are dealing with today. The first is Venus conjunct Saturn in the sign of Scorpio and the second is Mars in Capricorn in square to Uranus in Aries – both aspects can be very difficult in relationships because together they invoke ambivalence.

Let’s begin with Venus conjunct Saturn. This aspect can make us feel rather insecure in our relationships – especially if the relationship is already problematic. In many ways, this aspect brings to the surface all the reasons why we are settling out of a sense of duty to other individuals rather than emotional connection and erotic passions. Further, you may feel less inclined to opening up in relationships because Saturn can induce a need for withdrawal and may indicate a difficulty relating to others at this time.

This dovetails into the restless and impulsive energies that are naturally inherent with Mars square Uranus. These two planets together can be rather explosive and there is a tendency to ‘blow up’ anything that is rudimentary and stale. In fact, the areas of your life that have become overly bound to duty and responsibility can be very apparent at this time making you feel rather agitated. It may be necessary for you to come to terms with your internal frustrations; otherwise, the more difficult traits of this aspect – impulsiveness, rashness, and reactive behavior can rise to the surface.

Now, back to the ambivalence. These two aspects are differently opposite in nature. One reflects being bound to others despite our feelings and the other reflects the need to break free from constraints that may be limiting your potential. It’s necessary that you take some time to be true to yourself and honor both these aspects. It may require compromise or you may need to break off old ties all together. Sometimes the only duty that matters is the one to ourselves.

After the intensive energies of yesterday’s Mars conjunct Pluto in Capricorn, it’s good we have a rather gentle aspect with Mercury trine Neptune. As a side note, I find it rather apropos that my latest episode of Keep it Magic (with Jacki Smith) involves manifesting your dreams. Mercury trine Neptune makes it rather easy to enter into the world of the creative imagination to help envision a deeper connection to spirit. Further, you will find yourself highly sensitive to the needs of others and will want to help those in need. Today is a great day for spiritual studies and meditation because your mind will not be fettered to the real world and therefore you will be more open to connect on the spiritual level. However, it is not a good day for discipline and you may find it difficult to focus on worldly matters. Escape is the word for the day – and sometimes everyone needs it!

Mars conjunct Pluto in Capricorn

I am going to be blunt from the beginning with this aspect – the energies are rather nasty and if you are not very cognizant of your motivations it is very easy to fall into its worst expression. Also, there is not much of a point spiritualizing it because it is what it is. Today, Mars will conjoin Pluto in earthy Capricorn and the aspect is known for its ruthless ambition. The energies of these two planets are disruptive and explosive and the more frustrated it gets, the more likely it is to blowup. It’s very necessary to be on guard today and conscious of your choices and decisions, because the true energy beneath this aspect is about power and our need to survive in an often hostile world.

The best way to work with Mars conjunct Pluto is to recognize it for what it is and it augurs a time of self-interest and you motivations will be self-oriented in nature – and sometimes that is okay. Believing your motivations today are altruistic or of benefit to others (even if they can potentially help others), can often bring out the worst in other people are concerned with their own interests as well. However, this aspect is amazing for tough work and getting the job done. Just remember, with Mars conjunct Pluto, the more stubborn, insistent, and power hungry you are, the more you will experience the ‘need for power’ in others which could potentially lead to power struggles and conflict.

It’s a good thing that today is a Sunday because the excessive energy of Venus in Scorpio square Jupiter in Leo may be a bit much for the middle of the work week. You see, Venus loves the good things in life – expensive clothes, beautiful possessions, a lovely home and plenty of pleasure. When you add Jupiter to the mix, Venus becomes quite the party animal concerned with letting the good times roll. You may be inclined today to have lots of fun (and you should); throwing caution to the wind. A day of shopping, spending time with friends, and even hot romance with your significant other are all on the menu. However, you must avoid doing anything to excess because the emotional fervor of this aspect may lead you into compulsive behaviors. Further, personal relationships under these conditions are favored because you will be enjoyable and a pleasure to be around.

Mercury moves out of balanced and harmonious Libra and into the deep instinctive waters of Scorpio – the sign the trickster God was in before he went retrograde in October. As I’ve written before, the sign of Scorpio often brings our self-defeating behaviors to the surface, yet sometimes it is difficult to get to the root of them because our behaviors often much mask themselves with surface problems that need to be worked through in order to resolve our core issues. Mercury in Scorpio will help us understand our unconscious behaviors and formulate ideas for us to resolve them.

If you are going through issues that you wish to resolve, you can take some time over the next 3 weeks to do some inner work to get to the core of your issues. Then you can begin to resolve them and not be bound to issues from the past. In many ways, Mercury who is also a god of healing, provides us with the antitoxin to our inner venom.
